Y Traeth (The Beach)
Tired children trailing up sand dune track
from rock pool to cliff top
carry the day's detritus -
left-over sandwich in greaseproof paper,
apple cores, half wrung-out costumes,
bright plastic flags and picnic mugs.
from Langland to Rhossili
beach games falter to reluctant close
and cricket stumps are pulled,
sand castles left for sea to claim,
hand-dug channels filled with swirling brine.
Dune gives way to rocky path,
gulls wheel across reddening sky,
wet towel and seaweed slap sandy legs,
warm skin reeks of sun-creamed salt,
and thoughts run to 'What's for tea?'
All this while, the steady climb
as golden sun sinks over ocean
making a pathway
to tomorrow.
