'Funny What You Remember'

I opened a bottle of cider.
Someone had shaken it up too much
and the froth sprayed across the kitchen floor.

The phone rang.
The doctor's voice was kind but firm.
She did not speak for long.

Coming back into the kitchen
I saw golden tears of cider dripping
from a cupboard door and thought,
"I'll never have a drink with Dad again.'

'Funny what you remember,'
said my mother twenty years on,
through her tears.
